The first diamonds were not mined, but rather fished out of rivers, and early diamonds were not the shiny, faceted objects we know and covet today. The first records of diamond polishing (in India) and diamond cutting (in Belgium) date back to the 14th and 15th centuries, respectively. Before that it was rough diamonds that were kept by kings. Just as the diamond had always been know to symbolize protection and strength it also had a long history of being associated with love.
